Steve said, "I do have mixed feelings, happy for them to reunite with their family, worry about Shiwei's future treatments and their well being. I will keep contact with them. I do feel fortunate to know them, to be with them in the past three months. They taught me a lot. I can't thank you all enough for helping them through difficult times and I hope you will all keep watching and caring for Shiwei and his family. They'll need all the love, encouragement and understanding they can get to build their lives at home"

(Please make the check payable to NACA, and note that the donation is NOT tax deductible)。

Shiwei, a 1-year old boy from Sichuan mountainous region, will soon come to Boston for medical treatment for his severe burns(Degree 3 burns 头颈三度特重度烧伤). You might have heard or read about GuaiGuai, the little girl who lost her legs when she was thrown to the train tracks. GuaiGuai and Shiwei are among the six kids sponsored by Children's Healing Initiative (CHI), a project with Shriners Hospital (where the kids will be treated) established by Handreach Foundation. Volunteer efforts in the US are coordinated by Overseas Saving Chinese Children Foundation (OSCCF). OSCCF already found the host family for GuaiGuai. Now Shiwei needs your help!

His treatment is expected to be 3-6 months long. In-between his multiple operations and hospital visits, we hope he and his mom can stay in a hosting family around the area. Volunteers will take care of the hospital trips and their stay in the hospitals. The host family is expected to provide food and accommodation for Shiwei and his mom. His mom does not speak English, may not even know how to read, and doesn't know how to use stove, microwave etc. So we hope to find a host family with someone at home most of the time. Ideally, we are looking for 3-4 families to share the hosting responsibility.

More detailed status of Shiwei can be found here.

If you are interested in becoming the host family and help poor Shiwei and his mom, please contact Jiao Jie via this e-mail address below. Thank you very much!

=====================================================
(Updated by Qi McIntosh on Sptember 19, 2008.)

Shiwei has now had three surgeries: two on his neck and one on his mouth. He had his clinic appointment (follow-up on mouth surgery) on Wednesday (9/17) with Dr. Laio. His surgery was good. He can close his mouth now and does not drool all the time like before. Doctor and Mom agreed that the surgery for his eye could be done when he gets little older. So, there is no more surgery for this visit to Boston. His next surgery is scheduled a year from now. He still has two more clinic appointments with rehab for his JOBST (support clothing) in next four weeks. After that, they should be able to go home to Sichuan. We are thinking about having a party for them before they leave. We need to find a place and a date, so I'd like to know how many people are interested in joining us.

Thanks,
qi

Shiwei has returned from the hospital and had his first post-op checkup, I can provide the following glowing update.

Shiwei's neck surgery and his week-long recovery at Shriners went very well. The hospital staff all praised his quick recovery. He, of course, was not a happy guy for the first few days and his mom stayed and slept next to him all week. He returned home for a week and then returned for an exam yesterday. Again, the nurses and his doctor were very happy with how both his neck and the donor skin site on his leg were healing. He has two more surgeries to go; they will be scheduled in the next day or two. He must wear a foam collar all the time to keep a little tension on the neck skin.

In the play area at Shriners, he had fun playing with another little girl. At home, he is a happy little guy who loves to listen to music and to play with the overwhelming supply of toys that you have all given him. Visitors laugh and say, "He has more toys than my children!"

To all of you who came to visit in the hospital and at our home, with or without food, thank you. You know who you are. You have amazed everyone--the hospital staff, the social workers, the translators, the charity, Xiao Fang, Qi and me--with your wonderful care and support of Shiwei and Xiao Fang. Thank you many times over!

And if Xiao Fang knew I was writing this, I know she would want me to say a great big THANK YOU for her. She truly appreciates all the visits, diapers, clothing, toys and other supplies you have all donated. But, I know that, most of all, she very deeply appreciates the acceptance and affection you have all shown for her baby boy.

Steve

The following report on Shiwei(刘世伟)was written by Qi McIntosh, whose family is now hosting Shiwei and his mother Fang Houfen(方厚芬).

This morning (Tue, 7/15) Shiwei went to the Shriner's hospital in Boston and had his first evaluation. His first surgery is planned on July 22 with Dr. Sheridan. He will be admitted on Monday July 21 between 2 and 4 PM.

Today we met a surgeon, a nurse practitioner, a social worker, a nurse care coordinator, 2 anesthesiologists, had chest X-ray in MGH, and had lunch at the cafeteria.

Xiao Fang was nervous, which is very understandable. If I were her, I would be worried, too. The surgeon said the neck, mouth and eye are the functional issues that need to be treated first. The social worker talked to Xiao Fang and told her they want her to feel comfortable to ask them any questions regarding Shiwei's treatment, because she is a very important member of the team at the hospital. She did ask several questions regarding her stay there, those are answered and she is satisfied with them.

There are some remaining questions as how many surgeries Shiwei will need while they are in the US this time, and how long that would be. I told them Shiwei and her mother have 6-month visa, which can be extended if needed.

Xiao Fang seemed surprised to notice that Shiwei will only stay in the hospital for about a week after each surgery and will be discharged to host family for recovery. I think she did not really understand it when was told before.

I asked Xiao Fang on the way home if she wants to talk to her husband tonight or tomorrow. She seemed a little disappointed when the surgeon told her Shiwei's face will be improved after surgeries, but will not be as same as before. She did not say much on the way home, and did not want to call.

After a nap and dinner, she sounded a lot better. We chatted a while.

Shiwei did not like the checkup or X-ray at all, he cried a lot there, poor kid. After a long nap and little dinner, he is back to his normal good nature again.

It's a week already, it seems like they are settling in quite nicely. Shiwei likes to take a bubble bath every night and get very used this little routine, which is very comforting for Xiao Fang. He usually has good appetite. Xiao Fang is also getting little more relaxed everyday.

The conductor of the chorus group came to our house to meet them Thursday evening, brought a Sichuan dish and some “狗不理”包子, which turned out to be Shiwei's favorite. Last night at dinner time, I asked Xiao Fang if she wanted to meet the chorus people in CCCC at their practice. She said ok. So we went. They were all very kind and asked if they can help, I told them if possible to visit them while they are in the hospital, they asked for the details, I am going to send out email after they check in. I expect they will get the same kind and warm welcome tomorrow with the Newton chorus. There are totally 6 maybe more Chinese choruses in this group in great Boston area that my husband has been singing with. They are all very supportive. A good resource for Shiwei, Xiao Fang and for future patients, I believe.

At CCCC (Cambridge Center for Chinese Culture) there was a group of kids (5 -7 years old?) taking dance class last night, Shiwei had very good time there. It seems like Shiwei really likes Chinese kids music. He was walking around with his arms up and trying to sing along... parents and kids there were friendly.

I did talk to Xiao Fang about letting Shiwei play with other kids and treating him like a normal kid. I told her there will be some time that Shiwei will not be treated nicely, but that's not Shiwei's or her fault, that's the fault of those people. No one can change what happened to Shiwei, but we can help him to grow up to be healthy, happy, independent and strong. He can grow up just like all the parents want/dream for their kids. He deserves that and as parents of Shiwei they deserve that too. I do feel it will take long time and a lot of work for her, but that is the only way.

Taya has been exchanging email with me regarding Xiao Fang's concerns, she wants to talk to Xiao Fang over the phone while I can translate. We decided to have the phone call on Monday morning.

I did pass the information that Ping got from Taya to Xiao Fang, she said she does not worry too much about her own food and she can get used to it. We also started to let them try some American food. They both like hot dogs, spaghetti and French toast. Xiao Fang likes hamburgers, too. It took some effort to convince her to give all the strange food a try. :-)
